January 2021 - Inclusion & Diversity in the Awareness and Treatment of Multiple Myeloma - Dr. Joseph Mikhael (IMF)

Dr. Joseph Mikhael

We will be holding our regular monthly meeting on Saturday, January 9, 2020 from 1:30-3:00 PM EST via Zoom.  In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a little later in January, our January meeting will focus on the questions of how to foster more inclusion and diversity in the awareness and treatment of multiple myeloma. African American are twice as likely to get multiple myeloma than Whites, but face poorer outcomes. What can we as an organization and as a society do to improve the situation?

Helping us tackle that question will be Dr. Joseph Mikhael. Dr. Mikhael is a Professor in the Applied Cancer Research and Drug Discovery Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and Chief Medical Officer of the International Myeloma Foundation. Dr. Mikhael has a special interest in improving inclusion in access to healthcare, especially with regard to multiple myeloma, and he has spoken at international conferences on this topic. In addition to speaking with us about inclusion and diversity, Dr. Mikhael will be happy to answer questions about multiple myeloma in general, and there will be plenty of time allocated during the meeting for your questions to Dr. Mikhael.

All PMMNG members will receive a meeting invite via email.  If you are new to the group, contact either Maddie Hunter ([email protected]) or Marilyn Alexander ([email protected]) to receive the meeting link.

We look forward to seeing you on Zoom!

Note: Dr. Mikhael's slides from the meeting are attached below.
