Miles for Myeloma Funds Will Help Italian Researcher
The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) has announced that proceeds raised by PMMNG's 2016 Miles for Myeloma fundraiser will be awarded to the Italian multiple myeloma researcher, Nicola Giuliani, to support his research on bone disease related to multiple myeloma. The award will be made at a reception connected with this year's ASH Annual Meeting, which will be held Dec. 9-12 in Atlanta. Cindy Chmielewski will present the award on behalf of the PMMNG.

Abstract: The role of metabolic alterations in the pathophysiology of multiple myeloma (MM) bone disease will be investigated. Manipulating glutamine (Gln) metabolism of myeloma cells we hypothesize to block bone destruction. Moreover, we will check the effect of the anti-MM drugs on the enzymes of Gln metabolism in the bone microenvironment and the possible relationship between the bone marrow levels of Gln and its metabolites and the presence of bone lesions in MM patients. This study could identify new metabolic markers of bone disease and provide novel approaches to the treatment of MM bone disease.
